DATA CENTER COOLING

Give heat the cold shoulder

In rooms where a lot of electronic equipment and components work around the clock, cooling and heat dissipation strategies play a central role. Even in the case of ACU failure, prescribed supply air temperatures shouldn’t be exceeded, particularly in sensitive server rooms and data centers.

The realistic modeling of the room and the exact positioning of all equipment and systems provide the basis for an efficient cooling strategy. In IT rooms it’s essential that hot and cold air are strictly separated.

Data center

Whether it is the structural design or location of IT systems, the positioning of objects is a vital aspect in the design of air-conditioning for data centers and server rooms. Because from the enclosures to the positioning of perforated floor tiles, even small details can influence the efficiency of a data center (PUE).

6SigmaRoom comprises a large library which you can use to realistically populate the data center room via drag & drop with all architectural and IT-relevant parts, such as racks, ACUs & PDUs, as well as virtually any IT hardware. This also includes power and data cabling, of course, which offer DCIM-like management options.

So that the simulation is as realistic as possible – and you don’t get any unpleasant surprises.

Cooling systems

Simulation of different cooling strategies

6SigmaROOM offers you comprehensive libraries of cooling hardware, so that you can realistically model manufacturer-specific cooling units. These include air-to-air or air-to-fluid room units as well as in-row devices or rack-integrated coolers.

You also have the flexibility to model your own systems or equipment. In 6SigmaROOM you can define cooling units yourself using the datasheet parameters and control them according to temperature via sensors deployed in the room. This gives you the chance to test different indirect and direct cooling strategies and to simulate their thermal effects. In this way you can quickly determine the ideal position for new hardware components.

So that you and your IT systems don’t run up a sweat, even in extreme situations.

Overview

An overview of the options

Make planning server rooms and data centers easier with 6SigmaRoom and benefit from a smart simulation tool.

  • industry-specific application for data centers
  • comprehensive libraries for the IT hardware
  • modeling of enclosures, underfloor barriers and other constructional modifications in the IT room
  • improve work efficiency by virtually testing cooling strategies for new construction projects and rebuilds
  • create virtual twins (3D) for data center management
  • troubleshooting: find, understand and eliminate problem areas before you interfere in ongoing operations

The digital twin

Modeling a digital twin provides the basis for a thermal simulation.

In addition to the floor plan, this uses the comprehensive 6SigmaROOM library for ACUs, racks, IT hardware, PDUs, perforated floor tiles and other objects that can be placed in the room via drag and drop.

Thermal simulation

Having defined the associated heat losses in the IT hardware and possible controlled cool airflow from the air-conditioning units, the air flow pathways, and thus the temperature profiles, can be fairly accurately predicted, similar to a weather simulation.

This is done on the basis of sophisticated CFD technology.
